Use of 'used to' and 'would'

I hope you have read my blog on USE OF HAVE TO AND HAS TO AND MUST.

This is my second attempt to talk about grammar. Students often get confused about the past tense and the way it should be used. Here is my blog that focuses on a specific use of past tense using "used to" and "would". However, the critics say that there is a thin line difference between the modals.

Table for Would and used to

This is to make you clear the use of "used to" and "would".

Aunt Podger used to ask what was to be done with it. Then Uncle Podger used to take off his coat and begin. He used to send the maid out for six pennyworth of nails.

Both "USED TO " and "WOULD" are used to show habitual action in the past. However, 'would' cannot be used to show states in the past.

Verbs like 'play, go, ride' are action verbs. Verbs like 'be, love, have, believe and live show states. (They are continuous, not habitual)

1. "Would" is used when we establish the past time frame before the word "would" appears.

For Example,
When I was a child, I would watch cartoons with my dad in the evenings.
When I was a student, I would read books in the library every Friday.

If the time frame is established after, "used to" can be used.

I used to watch cartoons with my dad in the evenings when I was a child.
I used to read books in the library every Friday when I was a student.

2. "Would" is not used with stative verbs (verbs that describe a state of being), such as be, understand, feel or love.

For Example,
When I was a kid, I used to love playing in the park.
When I was a kid, I would love playing in the park.

3. We cannot use "would" when we want to talk about a past state. We have to use "used to"

For Example,
I used to live in the village when I was a child.
I would live in the village when I was a child.

So, the use of "would" is more limited that "used to".

Can We Stop Earthquake? Question & Answer

COMPREHENSION OF THE LESSON "CAN WE STOP EARTHQUAKE"?

This is an excerpt from an article that was published in a magazine titled "World of Wonder" and a portion of it is a study material in the CG. State board course. I am giving it for a reference purpose for the students of CG.the Board.

The titled of the chapter given in the book is- "Can We Stop Earthquake?" The present write-up is a set of questions and answers given in the book.

Earthquake in Alaska (Photo-Google)
Q.1 What is an earthquake? How does it occur?

Ans. There are three reasons for the earthquake

  • The first reason is the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the earth which causes deep stress inside the earth.
  • The second one is related to the movement of the earth from one side to the other on its axis.
  • The third cause is the result of the presence of water in between the deep-lying rocks.

Q.2. Why were only a few lives lost in the 1968 Alaska earthquake?

Ans. Becuase Alaska is relatively less populated part of the world. That's the reason only a few lives were lost the earthquake.

Q3. What tells you that the Alaska earthquake was a particularly powerful one?

In 1968 Alaska experienced the earthquake. It is said to be particularly powerful one because when this earthquake occurred the whole area moved about 80 feet farther west into the Pacific Ocean. Almost the whole of the subcontinent was moved by this earthquake.

Q4. How were our present continents formed?

Ans. Our present continents were formed in a strange way. it is presumed that the deep rock under the earth formed huge islands which started floating on the softer and hotter rocks beneath the earth. Slowly they got separated and huge land masses were formed which were known as continents.

Q. 5. How do we know that another earthquake is likely to occur in California?

Ans. According to the scientist, another earthquake is likely to occur in California within the next 8000 years, California is situated on the earthquake zone; the San Andreas Fault. There was an earthquake in Los Angeles in 1971. From their experiments and investigations, the scientists came to the conclusion that another disastrous earthquake may occur in California.

Q 6. Why do people not leave the cities in Calfornia to escape the expected earthquake?

Ans. It is said that the expected earthquake may hit within coming 8000 years. As the exact time of the earthquake is unpredictable, so it is not practical for the people to leave the cities.

Q 7. How do Californian scientists hope to get an early warning of an earthquake?

Ans. As the Californian scientist is aware of the coming disastrous earthquake, they are trying their best to save the people from it. They have built two scientists on a part of San Andreas Fault, at a distance of four miles, connected with the laser beam. If there is any tremor, the beam will be disturbed and that will create a warning of the coming earthquake for the people.

Q 8. What is the suspected cause of the 1967 earthquake in the Deccan plateau?

Ans. The suspected cause of the earthquake was the constructions of the dam which built in 1960.

Q 9. Where do scientists plan to set off the controlled earthquake quake?

Ans. It is planned to set off in a part of the San Andreas Fault.

Q. 10. How might the setting off of controlled earthquakes help to prevent uncontrolled earthquakes?
Ans. It will lead to a process by which pressures underground can be artificially destroyed by a series of small controlled earthquake and will help to prevent an uncontrolled earthquake.
